Well, I'll be the first to admit I haven't played it online yet, I play very few games online really. I've only played a good 1 or 2 dozen games online, not that many overall. Everybody goes on about multiplayer, but I prefer singleplayer still. I'm not saying multiplayer sucks, I've had really fun games online, but I tend to prefer playing either alone, or with people I know. There were games (Quake2, Jedi Outcast, UT, Counterstrike, America's Army), where I played on public servers for a while, but never longer than two weeks. After that, it bores me already heh. Anyway, this all sort of just to mention that multiplayer doesn't tend to be my thing.
Luckily for me, my girlfriend has two brothers, both who have played NWN together on LAN. After that one time, one of them went back to Ragnarok Online and the other one went to play Ashron's Call (!!!). Both are mmorpgs. NWN should have been an mmorpg. Right now, it's just - to me - a watered down multiplayer game, with a lousy singleplayer part. You keep mentioning all the wonderful mods that exist and I'm sure they are good, but why the heck would I need them for? Why can't I enjoy the game straight out of the box? What about people with dial up (who technically pay per minute or hour that they download) or people with no internet? I paid nearly €50 (or was it €60? I forgot) for NWN and I've enjoyed it less than say even Unreal2, which only kept me busy for a good 2 days really.
Like I said, I'm happy that other people enjoy it, but I don't. The earlier mentioned bad menu system (no, for me it's not fast btw, unless you struggly an hour putting everything on hotkeys, which really defeats the original purpose of having a fast menu), lousy rules implentation (all animal companions do 1d3 damage, that's sacreligious! Half the spells were left out! Kobolds had to be added later on! This is basic 3e DnD stuff and they could not implent it).
I'm sure Jefklak could go on and praise the game, so it's good he/you like(s) it. I unfortunalty don't and that'll never change, unless on a good blue Monday, I reinstall and play a few mods. Ironically: I did that last month and just then all the singleplayer mods were down or kinda really hard to find, again this didn't increase my opinion on this game. It's sad though I would need these to begin with to enjoy a game I paid for...
