After putting in about 10 hours so far of EA and running a wizard I’ve gotten more of a feeling on how I feel about status effects and the changes made to the damage die.

As some have already pointed out one of the more drastic changes has been to the cantrip Firebolt. In 5e it’s a 1d10 fire damage die while in BG3 it’s been changed to 1d6 fire and 1d4 burning.

This cantrip I feel best illustrates what I like and don’t like about these changes. I feel like it’s a good first step in figuring out balancing the game but at the same time it loses what 5e should feel like. Status effects like burning don’t really have a place in 5e as much as it should be outright fire damage. I would much rather have my 1d10 than continual damage from burning with a 1d4.

As well as there are status effects that don’t work well with the resource management system that we have in 5e. I saw posted in the Baldur’s Gate 3 subreddit someone concerned with how to get rid of the burning status you can use create water (or throw a bottle of water?) however when in combat this feels like a waste of resources. Whether it be a spell slot or a action/bonus action. I would prefer that surface and character based damaging status effects be removed as it feels less like 5e D&D and more like Divinty.
