The NPCs aren't really set up to give us much of a choice for subclasses. Lae'zel gives a choice between Battle Master and Eldritch Knight...but her Intelligence is only 11 (despite being a Githyanki). Astarion gives a choice between Arcane Trickster and Thief, but his Intelligence is only 9 (which is also bad for other reasons - rogues typically use Int for Investigation). Without a higher Intelligence, the spellcasting for both Eldritch Knight and Arcane Trickster is subpar, making it a poor choice.

Yep, I noticed this as well. I don't expect this right away, but it would be nice if upon recruitment, you could rearrange their existing ability scores so you could have more flexibility. As it is, they're railroaded away from certain roles.

What pops out to me the most is that Lae'zel and Astarion are from races that give an intelligence bonus yet have relatively low ints.

There is an item that you can find that fixes this problem (a Headband of Intellect)...but you probably won't get it until after you've chosen the subclass.

And then you've got Wyll, the Blade of Wilderness, who can only be... a Pact of the Chain warlock.

I know that's because Pact of the Blade isn't in the game yet, but it just seems a bit silly.

Pact of the Blade isn't proficient in martial weapons like Rapiers, yet that's what he uses. Intriguingly, a Hexblade IS proficient in martial weapons.

Better yet, can I just make my own other companions? You made a group where I don't like all of them and most are doing their class poorly
