Hey there!
I'm very excited about the game. Very fond of the companions so far too! I can't wait to see more of them. This isn't an indirect commentary about the story companions or what they're like. I think they're great!
And, this isn't really a high priority and it feels a bit silly to add it as a suggestion. But here goes:
Next to a serious playthrough, where I indulge in the lore and the writing, I like to have mini-adventures. Interesting challenges and experimental play, following my own set of rules. Part of the fun in these games is party selection and customization - wide variety of equipment and special items. I can't get enough of that, to be honest.
In Pillars of Eternity you can hire your own companions for a fair price at the inn. In Baldur's Gate there was a way to get an entire party with custom characters as well. This created many memorable moments separate from my serious save. It made for fun - short but creative - iron man plays and light-hearted, heavily themed party set-ups.
I hope this is something you will consider adding in the future.
