If you hover over the words in the combat log, there is a pop-up that breaks down the dice rolls. So you can see all the info you need there.
I confess, never having played anything with 5e, I am getting a bit lost sometimes. I know the 3.5e pretty well, so keep making assumptions that turn out to be wrong.
The place I am missing info is in the spells though. Their descriptions are awful - we need to know things like duration and effects before casting them. (Durations can mostly be seen by the effect they generate, hovering over the status indicator, but this is not true for all spells.)
