I know, I know, merchants and commoners shouldn't have a chance against a hardened adventurer. But still, considering that Fistan-something, the owner of Ars Magicana, was capable of enspelling his stash of potions with a powerful, instant-kill trap... Shouldn't some of the non-hostile NPC's have a chance against the player when we attack them? It'll make, at least, robbing them naked a little more challenging. And it's really illogical when a supposed archmage can't even defend himself, but instead run (and gets slaughtered anyway).

Otho and mardenus were the only one's who defended themselves. Perhaps just equip them with freeze spells and then they grab the town guard who hand-cuffs you or something.

As far as I know that would create more work for them since factions aren't easily edited like that. If you make one merchant hostile, all the merchants would be hostile to you in such a case, which makes no sense (word doesn't spread that much... does it?) The running away behavior of the merchants is just so that they don't turn hostile and ruin your chances of ever selling anything again. I think it's fine as it is right now.
