I have not finished the early access yet so I still have a few things to do and still have my second playthrough which I want to do differently however there are a few issues with that.
I am mostly enjoying everything about the game down to it's world, characters, graphics, writing and feel. I feel as if Larian has done a banger of a good job on multiple fronts and I applaud the good work. There is however one massive down side to the game that will be loved by many and hated by many at the same time. Before I begin I recommend perhaps having your current system in place but perhaps having a different system for players to pick from. So what system am I talking about? RNG! Let me start off by saying I have never played DnD as it does not appeal to me and I know those who love DnD are most likely telling me to stop playing the game as it's not meant for me. Baldur's gate 3 is not like the previous two games and from what I have read is not exactly the same to DnD, example being the point pool system when you create your character. So what aspect of RNG do I feel is bad for the game?
Role Playing Game
I find myself barely in control of the RPG aspect of this game due so many decisions being made for me by a random number generator. I have seen many forums posts where players save before interacting with ANY npc incase they have a RNG moment in that conversation. I too have found myself saving before talking to most npc's as I don't feel like getting screwed over by RNG. If I fail the dice roll then I just reload till I get the outcome I wanted or something similar to it. DnD players will say 'Just role with it', pun intended however most lovers of RPG games don't want their decisions to be made for them by RNG. What is the point of the system if I am just going to have to reload a bunch of times till I get the outcome I WANT. It just frustrates the player and ruins the experience. The solution I see is to keep the original system for DnD players but also have an alternative system that relies on different factors if I will be successful at a given dialogue option. So for example if I am playing a strength character for example who just wants to crush face and a dialogue option comes up with Intellect point check on it then I know I won't pass that check as my character is not great in that department as he is bit of a dumb brute. In the end I want to be in control of my actions and not RNG.
Combat
I have played XCOM 1 & 2 and other games that have somewhat similar combat with RNG. Baldur's gate 3 once again relies on RNG to determine whether you will win or lose combat. I feel like far too many aspects of this game rely heavily on RNG for anything. Yes it's dungeons and dragons playstyle but that does not mean it's good but I guess that depends on who you ask. Doing X amount of damage based off RNG is tough as is but then RNG plays another role if you will hit. Missing attacks with 94% chance to hit happens more than I would like to admit. Combat feels as if 80% of the time you just missing attacks and feels very discouraging. When I attack with high chance to hit (80% and up) I always just sigh as say 'here I go missing again.' I feel as if the combat is mostly fine but you will almost never hit an attack below 60% and only sometimes hit an attack above 80%. Now I know what you are thinking "That's how it's supposed to be" however I miss about 90% of my 80%+ hits. It misses far to often which such high chance to hit. I would understand missing here or there but I almost always miss. Combat is just a air slapping battle. I am a warrior but I can't hit the backside of a barn even if I am standing right in front of it in the middle of the day. I hope this is a bug and if not I would hope they would take a closer look into this as combat feels awful when all you do is miss.
Final thoughts for now
The game is great but I feel as if I am not the player and RNG is. I feel as my choices of race and origins mean nothing when RNG is going to be making all the decisions for me in terms of dialogue and combat. Heck you can't even picklock without RNG lifting its ugly head. A certain amount of RNG is fine but this is just too much. I don't want to just role with what ever decision RNG gives me otherwise I might as well let someone else play the game for me and ask them what ending I got when they finish the game for me. Remember when people could buy what they want from virtual stores then loot boxes came into the picture? You buy what RNG gives you? Yeah no one likes that so please Larian give us players who want to be in control without having to save and load hundreds of times a system to enjoy ourselves with.
Have a splendid day and thank you for all your hard work.
