Larian Studios Forums Baldur's Gate III Baldur's Gate III - Technical & Gameplay Problems Crash on Startup

Started earlier with Vulcan with no issue, had to stop partway through the prologue because it wouldn't let me interact with chests and the character who was being operated on. I came back later and would crash on startup every time, with or without DirectX11. I updated my drivers, restarted my computer, verified game file integrity, everything.

I'm having a similar issue,except it happened after I quit the game in the Blighted Town (I think that's the name of the place). After that,despite restarting my computer,updating the drivers and everything else,there's just no way for me to launch the game anymore,it always crashes during the loading screen after the initial splash screens.

One thing to note is that my computer crashed seconds after I exited the game for the last time,that might be related,though I can't say for sure

Try navigating to \Steam\steamapps\common\Baldurs Gate 3\Launcher\LariLauncher.exe or equal path depending on your install location, press and hold down the Shift-key, and don't release it until the game boots, right click and run as Admin.
Try the same with \Steam\steamapps\common\Baldurs Gate 3\bin\bg3_dx11.exe or bg3.exe.

Navigate to \Documents\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3\PlayerProfiles and try moving your folders to a handy location elsewhere (Don't delete!), but leave the playerprofiles.lsb file be. Then try booting the game.

Shutting down all non-essential programs is worth trying to see if it fixes the issue. Disabling the Steam overlay, or Discord and other overlays have also proved successful at solving crashes.
Disconnect USB controllers!

If nothing is successful then consider making a ticket to support.

Same thing is happening to me. I have tried:

1. Starting with Vulcan
2. Starting with DX11
3. Running it as an admin
4. Uninstalling and reinstalling the game
5. Updating my drivers.
6. Disabled Steam Overlay.
7. Verified integrity of game files.


I had 20+ hours played with no issues. What gives Larian? Don't know how to fix this now.

And the issue is now back, and the previous fix no longer works.

Update on my issue - So apparently it only affects my later saved games (20 hours or so in). I was able to start a new game just fine... the test today will be to see if I can load up that new game.
