Definitely +1 to getting SOMETHING in exchange for Awakened Mind as written in the TT. If they want to maintain the combat vs. RP utility split, getting a +1 bonus on social checks or advantage once per long rest or something or whatever. If they want to give them a combat effect, increased saves for mental effects or something could be a good alternative, or as suggested Charm Person (though probably once per long rest or perhaps short rest, at will would be pretty OP).

No matter what though they should be getting SOMETHING at level 1.
