Or he is just addicted, like heroin or cocaine and its all show. Maybe its just fuel for his very powerful illusion spell and he is a lich or worse, he steals the items for him self to sell them later as the naive and stupid player would do everything he can to save him. Easy pickings and a fortune to be made.
