Considering you have an infinite number of slots in the inventory, whether or not currency takes up a slot doesn't make it more or less realistic.
I agree, it would be nice to see copper, silver, electrum, gold and platinum pieces all be a part of the game and added in a way that takes them out of the inventory space.
