You 'used' it correctly, the ability is just buggy. It works with Burning Hands (most of the time) but almost never works with Shatter.
Hopefully they fix it soon and, more importantly, make it more true to 5e rules (which is only being able to sculpt out 1+spell level of people, rather than just all allies)
