So my wife and I have cleaned out the blighted village and low and behold we come across a weakened wall in the basement of on of the houses. With a little work we break through to the Whispering Depths! So cool. A cavern complex! We, of course, set out to explore it. After all, its accessible via the village so we figure it must be doable, right?!?
Heh, wrong. we clear out the various ettercaps and then come across the phase spiders...
So far we are doing pretty good. Tough but doable for our 3rd level adventurers.
Deeper we go. Deeper still. More Phase Spiders and still deeper.
What is this? Phase Spider eggs? Hmm. That doesn't sound good...
Then of course we meet the lady that has been laying those eggs. A Phase Spider Matriarch.
It does not go well (lol). We fight valiantly, but one by one we are left dead to the waves of phase spiders, phase spider spiderlings and the Shelob like Matriarch. End scene.
I love the fact that there are areas that are just way to powerful for lower level, less well equipped characters. We laughed at being overwhelmed, went back a save and crept out of that foul place swearing we would be back when we could destroy the foul beasties that lay within! Games where one can defeat anything you run into, no matter what, get very boring very fast. Some areas SHOULD be to powerful for players to just waltz into as if we were gods.
Dang, I am enjoying this game!

Hey all things considered I think we did really well.
And I will say that this was the first time my Ranger tried to conjure a spider as her companion - very very cool creepy companion with a nicely chittery mumur.
I was torn between "this is so coool" and wanting to brush imaginary spiders off my own back.
And I will say that by sneaking, we did get to fight (and beat!) some of the spiders...but there came a point where we were overwhelmed. And I really hated it/loved it. Loved to hate it? Yeah, I think that's it.

Dang, I am enjoying this game! yeah this place was my oops why'd I do that, that my roomie nearly broke a rib from laughing at as I regaled the stirring tale of my daring adventure. The wall called, and fell to the mighty swing. No spells, no short rest rest, blood trickled from our numerous wounds. yet we pressed onward, over the annoying web bridge. The sounds of screeching, and chittering echoed through the cavern as the EtterCRAPS (I know spelled wrong shhh child) lurched from the darkness. A bang a whoosh of displaced air, as a OH SHIT I'M Screwed phase spider showed up. Yet undaunted, our pants soiled we fought on through part of a turn, a whoosh and bang as another FML why did I do this phase spider joined the fray. Yet we pressed on standing in our assorted excrement, are armored thongs soaked in what isn't sweat. We fought on, Wyll tried valiantly to survive yet fell. The Fickle one long my she scream decided to take a nap, after all she's our healer why not! (note she didn't have spells left), Twas only that annoying Fang Boy, and a valiant Female Tazshara a fighter of renown (in her own mind) left. The UtterCRAPS were down, yet Taz was down. Fang boy leapt behind a wall, swiftly steathily lurking in the shadows. To spring out and fire arrow after arrow. Fickle slipt into eternal dreams, Taz faded into twilight. yet at last the last spider fell. and Wyll still slumbered! what did I do, I got this heal up and pressed right the fuck back to camp. Nope lessoned learned.

Wow Clavis, you are quite the storyteller...and parts of it were/are soo very familiar.
SPOILERS AHEAD!!
We snuck, we crept, we got covered in webs, we scanned ahead and freaked, and the initial fight with the Ettercaps was mostly back and forth in stealth (not actually MOVING, since we spent about half the time stuck to the dratted bridges).
I found that my lovely Chittery Conjured Spider can jump for nobody's business, and that spiders are immune to poison (who knew!?!).
Crept forward to loot webbed bodies, found another frikken blue phase monstrosity...and crept forward and kilt the thing...and then....
And then we got a bit overconfident.
There were piles of eggs.
There were hints of bitty movement.
There were another two phase Spiders..and then..in the dark beyond.. chittering whispers of the primordial guardian of the eggs.
SHE rose from her nest, and called forth swarms (and yes, I do mean frikken SWARMS) of her poison fanged eight-legged child minions to assault us.
Yeah... so ... we all died a LOT.

Not really, just a chore removed from my list, I tried to just steal the keystone in stealth and avoid combat entirely (my preference) but doing this corrupted all saved games made after that. So forced combat it was. It was a relief when that spider finally died but that's all.

How do you feel she was cheating?

It took me all I had the first time around to get her down to below 50 hp and then she turns on Wrath of the Spider Queen. Wtf was that, that buff was way too strong on an already OP critter. It felt like she already had way too many hp and movement on top of the little bastard minions she hatches if you don't kill the eggs first in stealth (I couldn't kill half of the last batch because she returned and started camping them). AND she has two normal minions as well. Totally over the top.
ps. I don't use surfaces because I hate them with a vengeance. So I was missing many attacks doing it the normal way.
p.p.s. My blood still boils when I think back on that fight, I will skip it next time for sure.

It got pretty dicey for me until I noticed the thing was phasing onto the highly flammable webs. She took about 80 damage in total from falling damage, iirc.

That encounter was definitely my favourite on EA, it makes you approach the situation carefully and really use your head. Good luck just rushing in there with no plan.
Necromancy is just recycling...

Pat yourself on the back, raise a glass and sing 'Nothinng like a spider fry, and a cold ale on a Friday night! Armor that fits just right, and blade raised uuuup.' (note lyrics changed from original country song.) I'll agree with you on the surfaces I to dislike them in general. Though will burn webs and other things that make sense, like tossing out grease and lighting a match under her creepy arse.

I gouged over 80 health off her with my fight against her just by burning webs she phased onto. That fall damage adds up very quickly! I felt rather smug about thinking of that.

Sorry for necroing, but I didn't want to open a new thread for this: Is it necessary to go down there and fight the spider queen? I'm not very fond of spider in general to say at least and although I had no trouble fighting the phase spiders and ettercaps so far, I'm not really in the mood to face Mrs. Shelob personally atm. So I contemplating to skip it. So please do throw spoilers my way - do I need anything from down there?

You don't have to. Totally optional. I'm not particularly fond of spiders myself, but I really like this fight.

For sidequest with necro-book ... there is gem that opens it, but that book seem unfinished anyway, so all you get from it is consumable artefact for Gale, and speak with dead spell if you roll your dice right. And there is actualy quite interesting loot ... specificly cloth chest that will add 1-4Dmg for all your poison spells. Then some gold, some xp, and boots that allow you walk on webs ... that is about all, if im not mistaken.
I still dont understand why cant we change Race for our hirelings. Lets us play Githyanki as racist as they trully are!

The boots I have already. I looted everything in teh upper level, but I somehow am hestitant to go further. Maybe when I can play during day, in sunshine, the spiders will look a bit more friendly (for the record: I'm cool with my familiar spiders). I don't like dark caves and spider in games - it's unfortunately a very common trope. I still remember how I nearly peed myself, when that really big Frostbite spider came down from the ceiling in that cave in Skyrim. But to get the curve to the first post - the area is very well made. The fact, that I don't want to go on, is proof enough for me. The sense of dread is a bit like with the broodmotehr in Dragon Age Origins.
