I would simply like to agree, that one's background and race should play a role in our starting gear.
As for the cosmetic side of your post, I like the idea of having a 'saved' character depiction, so if you change gear your character will still maintain the same armor appearance. I agree that it is a bit wonky when all my leather-wearing companions look exactly the same, all my plate wearing companions look exactly the same, etc., when they have such fantastic unique sets of armor at the beginning. If we could 'update' this 'saved' character depiction as time went on, when we found armor that we liked more, that would be great.
