When it says 30 %, that is almost always because you are on lower ground OR the target has cover.

Also, in the core 5e rules, doing a ranged attack in melee = Disadvantage, but I do not know if BG3 integrates that now (prob. not).

Example : Eldritch Blast with +5 to hit (so Chr 16) versus AC 16 (decent).
50 % chance of hitting. So yeah, when you playing the tabletop, you may not realize you only have 50 % chance of hitting !
With Disadvantage, the percentage is 30 %

it doesnt account for the base roll of 4 almost everytime. In melee my defense is 17 and 16 on my frontliners, and I get hit a ton while I miss more than i get hit.
An example is that githyanki fight-- my lord this guys get 2 to 3 attacks per round and hit everytime.

I finally gave up-- took out asterion and added Gale so I could AE debuff them wth grease/web-- and even then I was left with only 1 character alive because the are hitting for 20 to 25 a hit with non magical weapons. In fact their crossbow user gets to fire 2 attacks per round hitting for the same amount.

I had a different experience with the githyanki fight. Yes, Gale got the same treatment as stormfront in the last episode of the boys, but that gave me an opportunity to take out everyone on their team in one go each turn.
