Since you can't use charm person while in dialogue, I assume I should use it on a person I am about to talk to?

But who does it work on, and who doesn't it work on?
The spell states that they can't attack me, however it doesn't prevent Nettie from lounging at me with her poison. It doesn't even give me the advantage on charisma checks against her(I loaded an earlier save and the target numbers were the same with- and without charm person).

So we have to precast it, and then just hope it does anything? Seems like it very heavily promotes save-scumming.

In my opinion, we should be able to use charm person in dialogues if we have the spell prepared. Maybe not as a new dialogue option, but just as a button in the lower left beside the other options. Then we would be able to cast it if we see that we are about to make a charisma check

Its used in combat.

You can then control them. There is also charm monster which does the same thing to monsters

Yes, I've suggested that certain spells should be possible to cast during dialogue. Nettie is a good example of where the encounter probably should be possible to do with charm person. Of course, if the target resists the spell, the outcome should be bad. Right now I'm with you, I feel like I should hit quicksave all the time just in case I end up in a dialogue where I would have wanted to use charm person.

I'm not even sure if advantage works currently in dialogue dice rolls. You can mouseover the target number to see modifers, but it should be made crystal clear whether you have advantage as well. This is early access, so possibly charm spells just don't work fully quite yet.

Yes, charm person is also useful in combat. But it does give advantage to social dice rolls. Baldur's Gate 1&2 spells focused on combat, but in tabletop RPG's charm spells are great in social situations. There's nothing preventing this game from utilizing charms in dialogue. There's already a few cases where Detect Thoughts works in dialogue.

To make using those spells easier and more comfortable, they should be castable during dialogue.

One thing that should be possible is for a talking character to cast spells during speech, such as currently friends and guidance.

Currently you need to swap to a character that is not talking to cast the spell, mainly at this point just guidance.

You should be able to cast friends during speech rather than having to know when to cast it before a forced dialogue.
