Pretty good. I struggled for a while to find some reason, other than role-playing reasons to play them but being able to wear decent armour with no penalties is pretty based. Any thoughts?

Well, they get a +1 to intelligence and they are a space faring race which uses magic to travel. They were originally slaves of the Illithids. I dig em.
My Githyanki carries a great sword. Cool flavor. The free mage hand is useful as well, save my cantrips for other options. No darkvision but I use dancing lights when needed.

It's straight from 5e and any other mage can accomplish this with feats, specific archetypes, or multiclassing so yeah. It's fine.

Yeah, de-coupling armor use and class (to an extent anyway) is a pretty nifty thing in 5th edition, my Shield Dwarf Warlock runs around in Githyanki Half-Plate wielding a Warhammer

They also get a skill of their choice, which makes them a lot more flexible. The free Jump spell at 3rd level (and Misty Step at 5th) are also nice.
Unless characters start getting multiple attacks (which doesn't happen in this build), you can take a Str 16, Int 16 githyanki and do good damage with both weapons and magic. There are some magic items that make this even better (such as the Sword of Justice). Your one weak area is hit points.

There's a hat (circlet) that sets your Int to 18 too! So if you can survive awhile from dumping Int you can get some crazy good stats.

To be honest, armored mages has never been a big concern of mine. It's relatively easy to do with one of the dwarf sub-classes and Githyanki, but it doesn't concern me much. Especially in this edition where clothes, light, medium, and heavy armor can all get into the 20s on AC if you make the effort. A mage in armor is going to ameliorate some threats, but really the best defense a caster has is non-casters.

I'm playing a Githyanki Warlock 17str, 14 con, 15 cha and wielding a greatsword with GMW feat. It slaps. I'm hoping to remake him with Pact of the Blade which I expect to arrive in an update some day. Devil's sight + Darkness / Mirror Image / Armour of Agathys and resistance neck
It makes sense that Wyll, Blade of the Frontier.. will be pact of the blade and that's how he uses a rapier. It also makes sense that Warlock shouldn't have 2 normal APR when fighters would only have 1 in this EA

Ideally, my wizard never takes direct physical attacks, but having a decent AC frees up spell slots for other things. It's not OP or anything.

You can play wiz or sorcerer in half-plate with mountain dwarves too. They are very strong for abjuration wizards tank builds with their resistances and stats.
Gith seem better suited to make spellcasters, specially wizards.

It was a bit controversial when 5e launched, but it turned out to have no significant consequences. Other wizards can wear armor if they take the feat or multiclass (if it makes it in).
