So I'm playing a ranger and had one of these fights goblin fights in the shattered sanctum. I wanted to apply hunter's mark to one of the archer that had gone up to high ground, and couldn't. I got a "Too high" floating message. I could still hit the bugger with my bow, so this confused me. I have line of sight, I get an 81 % chance to hit the goblin, but he's too high to apply hunter's mark? Is something like this supposed to happen or is that a glitch?

I assume "Too High" because it's out of range with the spell?

According to RAW there is no such thing as too high, unless you were out of range of the spell, but that seems unlikely because Hunter's Mark has a range of 90 feet.

It must be out of range for the spell itself. Would be tough to figure if it was a bug based on the description.

I believe they changed all spells, ranged weapons ect to a standard range of 60ft, but essentially its the same thing if the OP was out of range.

It must be out of range for the spell itself. Would be tough to figure if it was a bug based on the description. Maybe I'm too naive, but what I expect is that if I can hit an enemy with my bow, I should be able to apply hunter's mark as well. Because otherwise it just doesn't make sense to me.

There seems to be some kind of targeting problems with most spells. I'm guessing they target the center body mass or check ground level or something. Bows can hit those higher elevation targets, but you see a line from yourself to the target, and can target any visible part of the enemy. Spells don't have a targeting line like that, except things like magic missile or scorching ray (which in my experience successfully hit anything that a bow can hit).

I'd consider it a bug, but this is a reasonable explanation. Thanks.

reducing the range on everything is a big part of the issue here, the whole point to using a longbow is the long range, the point to choosing some spells over others, is the long range.
