Don't compare an open world, easy to play hack & slash with this linear and harder than chess DnD, where I need to spend more time thinking than moving my characters.

A Skyrim is easy to sell, and if this BG3 wants to compete, needs a very clear user interface, explaining everything at each step or at least have it shown in log and tooltips, because I still can't understand what is happening and why, it's just not explained at all. Why I missed that attack? Log just says I used a skill, no damage, no calculation was made. Why? Because the enemy character WAS highlighted and I still clicked next to it, because the 3D model is so awesome and the cursor just doesn't show when is in the right spot. Or just says "you can't move there" when I'm right next to an enemy, clear terrain between us, have enough movement left, the enemy is right next to me already (almost), but still when I click on the skill says "too far", "can't reach"... so can't move closer and can't reach, because reasons. So I give up on hitting that with melee and hit something else with an arrow instead. These just don't make sense, should show somewhere the distance between my character and my target, and the reason why I can't move closer, if I'm still "too far". Then the skill descriptions need to show that skill will last how many turns and so on, because this would be a very complicated game even if everything would be explained, and just frustrating if it's not explained or shown.

These kind of games really need more sales, not just 1 million, that's nothing.
But in order to do achieve that, they need to be accessible to those new to these kind of games. Not by dumbing down the features, but by being transparent about what is happening and why, so everyone can learn it. So the reviews won't scare away new players with phrases like "if you aren't an expert at DnD rules or whatever 5e and so on, stay away from this".

If they were as accesible as Skyrim, they wouldn't belong to the genre. I prefer less sales, as long as they stay true to DnD. Not all games are for the big audience. Example? Civ 5, or even BG2.

If we're fair, they will.

Fwiw Swen has to be the biggest hams in the biz right now, hasn't met a camera he doesn't like and not a knock at all. He's one of the few rock stars that exists in gaming as most work behind the scenes or not given the ability to standout.

I really like Swen he seems like a great guy. But I fear his team is focused on the wrong things. I feel like most people love Baldur's Gate for the story and characters, but there is a minority who likes these game mostly for their gameplay. And I feel like Larian belongs to this minority. Larian are very good at creating sandbox worlds with a lot of cool gameplay possibilities but are mediocre story tellers at best. I hope they will improve on that front

That's your personal opinion, one NOT shared by most RPG fans.

Fair enough. You only want to focus on a very small niche subset within the cRPG genre. I don't see any justification for narrowing my focus that way. For me, an RPG is an RPG for comparative purposes, even though I also have my own preferences for certain types of RPGs over others.

And don't quote your personal elitist views to me. D&D mechanics are cheesy and silly to me. Nothing complicated or difficult or deep there at all. I don't have to spend a lot of time thinking about my moves in a D&D game, so you needing to do so may be a personal thing.

I'm usually not anal about definitions. I wasn't refering to the braoder genre as a whole but rather CRPGs, a sub-genre explained in the video some. Regardless of definitions, I've played Skyrim through, but I'm just glad that there's apparently still plenty space for more tactical experiences with deeper character systems, too -- just like in the games back in the 90s primarily popular on home computers and PCs.

If one wants to compete with Skyrim, one has to develop a Skyrim-like, which is a totally different experience. Just like Obsidian are doing in Unavowed right now, at least for the time being abandoning their initial PoE series (hopefully they'll get back to that too, and a successful BG3 may do not harm in that regard).
