Hi Guys,

I just wanted to address the only thing that kinda bothers me about BG3: the omniscient camera view.

I know that this is not an isometric rpg, we have an independent camera but somehow the camera in BG3 seems cheesy to me (the fact that you can just look into unexplored rooms in a dungeon). I know I don't have to use the camera like that, but still it feels wrong.

I mean, to me, the sense of unknown is such an important part of DND in general and in the old games in particular. To never know what you should expect behind the next door creates a sense of wonder and excitement which was a huge part of the old Baldurs Gate feeling. I also loved Divination magics in the old games, to map out the enemy before a battle was such a great use of magic.

I think introducing some sort of Fog of War could be great, if only in dungeons at least. Then, Divination spells (like Scrying or Arcane Eye) would have some sort of purpose, at least.

What do you think, though? Do you enjoy the new omniscient camera view or prefer the fog of war approach of the old games?

(I previously posted this thread but it just disappeared after the website was off for couple of hours).

My preferred view system depends on how far out (up) you're allowed to zoom the camera. If the game allows a fairly high zoom-out level like Wasteland 3 for example, I don't mind having the camera locked to the currently active party member, because I can see enough of the area to know where I want to go next.

BG3 on the other hand, has a fairly tight camera view. I can't zoom out very far to see the available paths, so it's good to be able to pan around to a limited extent. It saves me having to march the party over to the edge of a seaside cliff just find there's nothing interesting over there.

There are other issues like scouting for enemies and seeing them where you shouldn't behind walls and closed doors. But that can be handled with good game design, like allowing a camera pan into the next room or outside area, but not showing enemies or loot until you have line of sight.

I would love it if they added proper Fog of War and Divination spells that let you bypass it.
