Helmet on for battle, off for everything else. I’d also suggest that ears should be made invisible when you’re wearing a helmet – even human ears seem to clip out through some of the helmets I’ve seen. It would be safe to assume even elves could tuck their ears into a helmet, would look so much better than having them piercing through leather and metal.
