I actually think there could be something here, similar to how mirror image works.
Your base armor is 10, it changes based on what armor you wear, on top of that is your mobility (Dex), add to that armor added by a shield, so we get a gradation of armor classes.
So for instance let's say I have an armor class of 17, base 13 (chain shirt), + 2 (shield) + 1 (Dex), + 1 (shield of faith); so we could say, on a role of 10 or 11 the shield of faith deflects the attack on a roll of 12 I've dodged it, a roll of 13 or 14 , my shield blocked it (with a possible animation to go with it) and above that my armor absorbs the damage until it actually registers as a hit.
That sounds like a lot of work, but adding in a shield block animation randomly would still be something.
I'm not entirely sure if this is what the OP was going for but I think it's interesting.
