I just had the same problem, waste of time for 8gp... the only way i got my companion back to the group was to fast travel to our camp with the one stuck on the pillar then fast travel to the camp with the rest of the party. then clicking on the bed at camp brought everyone back to a group (companion wasn't stuck on the pillar anymore)
