I have tried different things to get it too, no success either. There is a holy font at the bottom that makes a different noise from other objects when you hit it. I kind of gave up trying at this point, maybe in the final game it will have something to do with it. I haven't figured out what the mechanism on the top of the gate does besides turning off the lights of the statue... that is also intriguing.
