Marking a race as "evil" or limiting the possibility for something more engaging and interesting feels short sighted and ham fisted - even when "the lore" states that they are biologically predisposed to consuming sapient life. Letting there be an alternative or variation creates new possibilities for story telling. This is coming from an absolute Illithid fanboy. I love em a lot, they're my favorite monster race and I dig everything that they bring to the table. That's why I was so absolutely hyped for BG3's focus on them at all since they're so unique and creepy.

While I'm still very early on in the game so I have no basis for this, I have a feeling that the Illithid that are present in this game aren't just going to be the mustache twirling brain eaters that so many people are satisfied to leave them as.
There has to be a reason that our little ride along brain slug saved us at the beginning. Sure, it may simply have been survival OR it may be a new evolutionary tactic in symbiosis with their hosts.
That's what I'm hoping for any way - separatist Illithid trying to evolve past their Elder Brain over lords.
Illithid society can't sustain itself due to its predatory nature so they must find a new way - Adapt or Die.
