I'm sure this is something most people have noticed but having characters in your party over their weight carrying capacity doesn't seem to have any adverse effects. Is that a 5e thing or just a design oversight?
Encumbrance is optional in 5e. I've mostly left it to an honor system when I run, similar to others in our group, and most of us are in a balance of realism to fun that we sort of track it but in the most convenient way possible (in my case, I just assume that it's mostly in my backpack and drop my backpack at first sign of combat to clear the weight).
In this game, you only start getting weighed down at about twice your weight capacity...
