Blimey, I remember pagers. I had two, a normal one and a red one for emergencies, and I was like "isn't the regular pager supposed to be for emergencies?" But my manager was... well, let's just say in addition to my mobile phone (which was in addition to my regular landline and business landline) I had a company mobile for important stuff and then an emergency company mobile too, both of which he would call regularly and angrily to see if I'd got the numerous irrelevant pages he would send to "test" them at any hour of the day.
I don't think we ever had a genuine emergency except for the general "don't panic, don't panic!" going on in his mind. Except he wasn't funny.
