It seems that he didnt want to MOVE one character, just select one character to create some action ... like cast buff ... and then select original one.
And what anoys him is that the second any character is choosen, all other characters start to feel urge to line up in a new formation.

For example when you try to cast bless with your cleric, but then want to step into conversation with your main character.

So start the conversation, select the buffer with the "Change Character" button in the dialog window, and cast your buff? It's what I did when I wanted to boost my chance at a dialog check.
