There have been a few threads on implementing side scabbards for weapons rather than the back scabbard, but I think most dealt with one-handed weapons.

I am firmly in the same camp as you, I abhore back scabbards as creatures of CRPGs that have somehow become established as a real thing. Others say that back scabbards have featured in other CRPGs so are 'canon' for similar games.

Trying to run about in 'the real world' with an 8-foot halberd strapped to your back is something I imagine would only happen once, but I suppose that CRPG animators have limited options when it comes to showing characters swapping their two-handed weapon for a bow or flask. Putting it down or handing it to someone else probably wouldn't work. Dropping your +3 Halberd o'Fiery Death then running off and forgetting where you lost it would be frustrating.
