You totally can start attacking defenders (im quite sure of it, since you can attack even people from your own group)
But once you kill defenders, goblins will turn on you (or more like while you do that) ...
wich is something they would totally do, since you dont belong to them.

From gameperspective it could be simple missclick ... but from RPG perspective, you just "accidently" put your sword in someones guts, and usualy people dont forget such things so easily.

Or do you really need conversation before every encounter to choose wich side you will join? :-/
The encounter started ... there is group one that is or isnt hostile to you ... and group two that is or isnt hostile to you ... all depends on groups and you.
For example in the Underdark there is quite possible to meet Bullet that is attacking some Hooked Horrors ... they dont even notice you if you stay hidden, and just fight each other ... but if you join the fight, they are both hostile to you aswell as each other.
That said ... i need to try sometimes "stay out" (read as: Keep in stealth, and skipping all my turns) of druid groove fight ... it will probably be quite boring ... yet i really wish to see the outcome.
