Well, you did try a mental armwrestling session with a MIND Flayer at level 1-2 when the game gives you plenty of 100% reliable options to best him.
Both in dialogue (not even a roll required) and in combat (you can target the downed mindflayer rather than fight the fishermen and be done in one single hit with the encounter).
