I like having some game over 'fail states'. It forces me to think about my actions more, adds tension, and makes the overall gameplay more fun. At least for me. If you fail the roll and have to restart its a "Ooop I need to be careful moment" and if you make the roll you realize just how close you came to dying.

Good point. It does serve to tell the player "Mind Flayers are bloody dangerous ! Beware".
( Mind you, in my case, I knew that already so I just killed it quickly the first time I met it. You have a point though that some deaths can be interesting in the gameplay.)

For other recent comments : this is just feedback as Larian said they wanted failed rolls to continue the story so players do not feel the need to reload.


Strangely, I failed a dialogue roll with the Mindflayer (got a 1 too) and he didn't eat my brain. That was the day after the EA released.

I'm actually wondering which dialogue sequence people have to follow to get that event, because not all of the Mindflayer dialog DCs lead to him eating your brain.
