The blockage here makes no sense, and it means I play characters that have 4 14s and they are all copies of each other. I can’t make a big dumb meat shield warrior with 8 int, wis, and cha. In Pen and Paper, having 3 8’s would be a bad idea, but I should still be able to do it.

In 5e, I find that stats at 18 are far more rare for starting characters. The point-buy or array generally let you get to 15, maybe 16, before racial modifiers. But, of course, you get to increase stats at level 4 and 8, and some Feats increase them by 1 (not available at present in BG3, but he alternate human build allows a starting Feat) so 18s and higher are jus around the corner for your characters.

Preach it brother (or sister). At least have some system to change names later.

I'm really not a fan of the old "you're playing it wrong" but I think you may need to look at your tactics here. I've played through the fight many times with many combinations, and Wyll only died once. For most of my playthroughs, none of the NPCs die. Are you using Sleep? Maybe Grease? Something to down a couple of goblins (or, better still, the chief, warg or bugbear) and allow the good guys to thin out the herd a little.
