I mean, flavorwise Larian could just basically reskin the hand crossbow as a pistol and allow the feat: Crossbow Expert to also apply to guns. (or a modder could?)
If they want to get fancy, maybe up damage to 1d8 and add a ~magic ability to all guns: on a critical miss the gun jams which mechanically applies bane to your character for 1 round or something similar
