Perhaps stupid question, perhaps not.

Does anyone know what those skills are for ?

I don't think I've ever seen any skill check using them. But maybe they give bonuses to some things under the hood. (I don't think they're supposed to in 5E, but who knows.)

Athletics is used for
-Making and resisting Shoves
-Making and resisting Grapples
-in general can be used for difficult climbing, swimming, jumping, etc.

Acrobatics is used for
-Resisting Shoves and Grapples
-not falling on icy surfaces etc
-doing nimble stuff, which probably won't be included that much in BG3 because that would require specific coding

In summary, Athletics and Acrobatics should be used for Shoves and Grapples. I'm not sure if shoves in BG3 use Athletics since their formula doesn't appear in the combat log.
They're also used for general checks, like breaking down a doorl, etc that might come up in various cutscenes/events

Ah, I meant, in BG3. I get what you described, and that would answer the question in the TT 5E. But as far as BG3's adaptation of the rules are concerned, I wonder what use Larian has of these skills. My current feeling is : not a lot.

(I created a Wood Elf Rogue, so I ended up with 8 skills, and I forced myself to pick Acrobatics because it sounded sensible. But that made me want to know what use, if any, these skills have at the moment.)

Acrobatics could be used for not falling prone on greasy and icy surfaces. I'll check whether this happens.

Idk what situations BG3 actually uses Athletics/Acrobatics...

I am guessing that in BG3, Athletics is rolled against target AC for Shoves. Again, this is only a guess. The formulas for Shoves don't appear in the combat log (why?). It could be rolling melee attack against target AC, or Athletics against enemy Athletics, or ???
Acrobatics could be used for walking across icy surfaces. But I think BG3 probably uses Dex STs.
Athletics could be used for shoving down doors, but in BG3 (Waukeen's rest) a pure STR check is used.
Athletics could be used for jump distance, but it may in BG3 just be purely based on STR
Athletics should be used for climbing, but this is not implemented in BG3. Either you can climb a surface or you cannot.

So, yes, I agree with you that BG3 doesn't seem to use these skills a lot.

I saw one check for those - breaking free from being chained up.

Pretty certain Athletics is being used for Jump/Disengage. My high Athletics characters seem to have more jumping range than the others.

Which means that Athletics is used ALL THE TIME now in combat, given that the current meta makes combat look like a damn flea circus.

Oh, good to know. You're sure this is due to difference in Athletics and not difference in STR?

As BG3 currently is, this means that Athletics increases a character's speed which is pretty darn powerful
