Mg666 is right about it being 1st level and up. You can find most info from on https://www.dndbeyond.com/ if you register, you can use the character builder that's free and has a lot of 5e info. Here's a link to basic rules from the site: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules

Versatile hmh? Maybe one day I will notice this.
All I see is people very often resisting stuff that costs a spellslot. Even spells that do not produce dmg but are used for crowdcontrol. Like fixing people in place and the like.
Others are bound to a threshhold of low HP of course before they hit 100%.

I just think there can be a group of 4 Warriors, maybe even with Shields just for the lulz - and each and everyone of them will one tough nut to crack.

For range we have "Molotov Cocktails" + Oil barrels or Smoke barrels.
Kinda like a Mage throwing a very big fireball.
Maybe I will learn to play the Wizard even better in the future - but right now they feel very unimpressive.

The Iceray is ironically super useful though.
It has two chances to introduce an enemy to the ground.
What am I to feel when a spell like that does not even use a spell-slot?

At this point I feel the Wizard is mainly an Ice-Wizard with some fun-gimmicks which are not truly his main power or intended purpose.

Versatile as in getting passed damage reduction, that crossbow you rely on will eventually run into piercing resistance monsters / monsters immune to physical damage.Ya, barrels, bombs, and what not can over come this, to each there own I guess.

I mean, I appreciate the info, but I'm familiar with 5e rules ^_^.
My point was that in BG3 you can do this and it's probably not a bug. I am assuming that Larian will change scrolls to only be usable by the proper class, but will probably leave in wizards' ability to learn cantrips from scrolls. I'd be fine with that.

@JustAnotherBaldu What about fire wizards via firebolt? Guaranteed damage with a chance of more, and setting people on fire. Seems pretty useful to me! And firebolt should have a better chance to hit than a crossbow if you have Int>Dex

The magic system isn't fully developed yet so we don't know if there will be any homebrew in final release.

Warlocks (or Sorcerers) learning cantrips from scrolls doesn't feel right. But with Wizards more flexibility would be ok.

Every class using scrolls freely doesn't feel right either. The Magic Initiate feat should let you use scrolls but not without an ability check if the spell is level 2+.

Restricting scrolls use to only being used by people have have that spell on the class list would bring it in line with 5e rules, but it would also make scrolls useless for anyone but those specific spellcasters. Either make scrolls free for all, or put it in line with 5e rules and stop the wizard scribe scroll abuse.

I don't agree with the interpretation of the magic initiate feat letting you cast spell scrolls from the selected class's list. The feat isn't supposed to be a substitute for taking a level drop into a spellcasting class.

That is the point, isnt it?

I think they would be still quite usefull, since they could either work as additional spell slots, so you dont need to rest after every combat ... or you could use them if some combat proove to be longer than you expected, or if you dont expected it at all ... there are some encounters in camp, where no one goes to that combat exactly "pepared". wink

I still dont understand why cant we change Race for our hirelings. frown
Lets us play Githyanki as racist as they trully are! frown

And since multiclassing is yet another way to open up scroll use, they definitely shouldn't be available to everyone.

Some dedication for a Fighter is definitely needed to open up this possibility rather than just leaving Int at 8 and wizarding away with whatever scrolls you find or buy.

Isn't multiclassing into Wizard just much more powerful than picking Magic Initiate? You get proper spell books, more spell slots, Arcane Recovery, and you get to spend that ASI on something else. I don't see the problem in Magic Initiate letting you use level 1 scrolls?

I do think there are way too many scrolls in BG3, especially divine. Divine scrolls don't make sense in the first place. The gods have Clerics as their conduit, but also let any random person be their conduit through scrolls?

Well, those divine scrolls are supposed to only be used by clerics.

Basically, taking the magic initiate feat doesn't actually give you a class's spellcasting list. You get 3 spells, but you are not a wizard/sorc/bard/druid, and the magic initiate feat can't be used as a substitute requirement for items that require levels in those classes. You are still a fighter, and you count as being a spellcaster, but you don't have a class spell list. I'll concede that you should be able to use scrolls of the spells that you do know.

We do have too many scrolls in this game though, I think that's because they are currently free for all and larian expect us to split them up between everyone, but even them there's still WAY TOO MANY scrolls. I've got more scrolls in act 1 of BG3 than I did in multiple acts of neverwinter nights 2. They would need the dramatically decrease the number of scrolls they throw at us if they restrict scroll usage, because Gale won't be able to move from all the paper.

Didnt go through all the posts but felt chromatic orbs main function is to make use of the new take on how resistant(1/2 damage)/weakness(x2 damage) works... select the element a creature has a weakness against and you are looking at 6d8...

Situational spell and one you matbe wouldn't pick up as a warlock... but not completely useless for a wizard imo...

...and i agree things might not all scale perfectly but not horrible either all things considered... at the end of the day i think they really tried to scale damage back some from previous versions, while they did a pretty good job... i guess not a perfect one...

Could someone correct me here, but in going through the spell lists for wizards, Chromatic Orb isn't there, for me... as far as I can tell it's not IN the game...
