With 1 gp / day supposedly considered a comfortable living, I'd say you're doing
much better than a chambermaid.
Considering how much of a role Fog Cloud plays in my wizard's combat tactics, I've been a little disappointed at how ineffective it is at breaking LoS, I kind of want your story to reflect what should happen in the game sometimes.
Yeah, the economy in D&D has always been a bit confusing and weird. Much worse in most D&D video games, though. This one especially. The prices of things make no kind of logical sense at all.
My story does reflect what actually happens in the game. If you want Fog Cloud to conceal you, you have to hide in it. Or hide, and then move into it. Since it blocks all vision cones, you can always hide inside it or behind it.
