I do like the idea of making the acquisition of an animal companion an in-game experience, rather than an inventory action. But on the other hand, real wild animals can be risky ... did you see what happened to Roy (ref. Siegfried & Roy)? Maybe magic is better. My Beach Druid would love to have a clam companion, but land mobility would be a problem. I was thinking of maybe making a little chariot that my clam could ride inside. Spartacus the Clam.
