You realize the context of this discussion is about those mythological and legendary depictions which have may have real world origins right? Noone is discussing those things which were born of pure imagination. . .except for you.

No, sorry, but that isn’t something I ever said; you invented those words and imposed them on my text somewhere.

I responded to the question “why do we want to make monsters in the first place?” by saying for the same reasons we always do, to which you replied with the baffling statement “monsters are hardly an invention,” which they are, even if they are inspired by something.

This kicked off the conversation, providing the context for everyone else responding.

Except for you.

I suppose there is perhaps one modern monster which they probably did not have in ancient times due to limitations in the architecture of a typical domicile. I hope this horror is more imaginary than inspired by anything real, though admittedly reality is often more varied than one expects. The sheer terror which this abomination elicits from the depths of my soul makes me loathe to even mention such things to the innocent readers here on the 'boards, and yet I am compelled to do so. I can vividly recall many a night lying in fear of this dread, blasphemous apparition, knowing not whether it be bound by inscrutable laws of undiscovered physics, or whether instead it simply revels in its ability to gnaw upon the edges of human perception, taunting and daring me to come closer ...

of course I am taking about the
CLOSET MONSTER !

When I was a child we had a piano diagonal to a corner in one of the room (in such a way that it creates a triangle space behind it), I was convinced there was a crocodile behind it and very afraid to go into that room.

Corner crocodiles are real yo.

A more famous example of a DnD monster is the Astral Dreadnought. It's head was used for the Cacodemon sprite in Doom. So, if my understanding is correct, WoTC made Cacodemons a type of monster; originally a generic 'very powerful' thing and but then in either 4th or fifth edition, a small floating demon with one eye and a large mouth.
