A more famous example of a DnD monster is the
Astral Dreadnought. It's head was used for the Cacodemon sprite in Doom. So, if my understanding is correct, WoTC made Cacodemons a type of monster; originally a generic 'very powerful' thing and but then in either 4th or fifth edition, a small floating demon with one eye and a large mouth.
