So Larian said they wanted to add more (all?) core races from D&D (which does not mean that they will do it in the end, after all they didn't promise it, just said they want to). But there is a problem with gnomes, specifically that they are incompatible with mind flayer tadpoles. And that is not legacy information from previous edition, but has been confirmed by the latest adventure released for D&D.
So that means abducting gnomes for implantation would not make sense at all as at best it would create a horrible mutated mind flayer (squidling) which is hated and instantly killed by proper flayer.

Garden gnomes are not in the game, there are only dwarves. This is different
Thanks to Larian for Baldurs Gate 3 and the reaction to player feedback

Good question. They mistook them for halflings! (Who also shouldn't successfully undergo ceremorphosis. But nevermind.)
In seriousness, squidlings are just botched gnome ceremorphs, right? And those are made for whatever reason. (Experimentation?)

Perhaps turning us into mindflayers is not the absolute's intention, therefore tadpoled gnomes are fine. Mind you, datamining findings include And our worm is kinda special one, non usual 7-days-tentacle-cycled

What a SHAME if they have to cut gnomes from the game. How sad I shall be!

This game doesn't involve ordinary worms. The "Its a specail tadpole!!111!1" excuse for inconsistencies already got old.

Gnome Ceramophs are a thing. Which results in those things. ![[Linked Image]](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/forgottenrealms/images/3/36/Gnome_squidling-5e.jpg) Yes sometimes there were also "proper" gnome mind flayers. Except that they remained short and, worse for mind flayers, retained there personality and were generally peaceful. So both results are undesireable from a mind flayers point of view which means gnomes wouldn't be abducted in the first place.

Oh no, I won't get to play as a gnome with a gigantic sword and pink hair? Whatever shall I do?

There is a problem with your link. But no, a Gnome Squidling is the result of an unsuccessful attempt at creating a Gnome Ceremorph. Like I said, Gnome Ceremorphs are a thing.

Ok, but does anyone know WHY illithids create gnome ceremorphs? I guessed experimentation, but maybe it's something else? (I don't have RotF, so only know what's on the FR wikia.)

Yeah, no idea why that additional information was added when I copied the link. Fixed it. I also added why gnome ceremorphs are also nothing mind flayers would want. Having CG ceremorphs around poses a huge security risk.

Yeah, there probably aren’t many good reasons to actually make a Gnome Ceremorph, but it does get around the problem that would otherwise prevent gnomes from being player characters. Plus, as it has been mentioned, these tadpoles have been altered for a purpose. The Illithids seem to be working with the Dead Three to create advanced psionic soldiers using tadpoles corrupted with Shadow magic, so actually creating new Mind Flayers might not be the objective.
