I rotate the camera with 'q' and 'e'. I mapped them to do so, because that's what's comfortable for me, while I control the camera with wasd, and zoom with the mouse wheel. This is comfortable and natural for me, as opposed to mouse wheel click rotation which is 'okay', but not my preference and not really comfortable or intuitive to my mind. The actual game's ability to work with the camera IS sloppy and not tight at all; it's not a problem with the control scheme specifically, so much as a problem with how the game engine handles the existence of the camera in the first place.
