I believe I read somewhere that Larian changed the combat because when they followed 5e as closely as possible, it was boring since there was a lot of misses between hits.

We also know programs are incapable of making dice rolls 100% random. So why not tweak them even more and keep the 5e ruleset as close as possible?

May I suggest rigged dice rolls?
Easy - dice rolls are favored towards PCs and in advantage situations they are almost guaranteed of success.
Normal - dice rolls are as random as possible.
Hard -dice rolls tend to roll low. Not sure why anyone would play this but hey, there maybe some who do. If it’s too brutal, it can be more like normal with less advantage situations.

This would allow players a more authentic 5e experience and provide a “more fun” combat since in easy mode you will be able to hit more often.

I currently have lots of misses between hits and find it boring for other reasons. What did they change?

I feel like if they are going to have different difficulty levels, I would want the effects of those levels to be relatively transparent. "The dice are kinder on easy mode" could be effective, but doesn't really communicate what's going on. It's pretty fuzzy.

Adjusting stats on NPCs and monsters (which potentially impacts their HP, AC, attack bonuses, spell save DCs, perception bonus, and in-conversation DCs) would work - still a little fuzzy.

Adjusting the PC's proficiency bonus would be clean, easy to explain, and would make you consistently better/worse at the things you are trained in.

You could also get more/less points for your stats during character creation.

Personally i like the idea of respectively divided difficulty settings that was already mentioned here countless times in many different topics ...
So no simple "easy / normal / hard" ... but allow people to set all things they want like: "diceroll dificiulty in dialogues / enemy HP / enemy AC / enemy attack rolls / frequency of long rests / etc." ... simply let people set their adventure as they see fit.

And why am i talking about it here? Two reasons:
1) I would like to create some encounters a bit harder for myself ... yet if all will be wrapped in usual "easy / normal / hard" settings it means that everything will be harder, and that option i dont like so much. laugh
I wanted to de-trivialize some encounters, not make my charisma focused character unable to persuate anyone, since every diceroll dificulty just doubled, nor make some other encounters litteral nightmare.
2) Bcs in this case i would say that there is no need for RNG to "favorize small or big numbers", honestly im no programer so if there is a way i simply dont know about it, but as far as i know i cant even imagine how to implement such condition.
Maybe im wrong here, but i believe that, in this case its quite elegant solution to allow people to simply reduce (or incerase if they wish) default enemy AC in settings ... they will do it with some mod anyway, so why resist. :P

Hi, so this topic is kinda why I joined. I just took on a small pack of lvl1 goblins with my lvl 4s with the lowest ac of 17 and highest 19 and not only were the goblins hitting about 2/3 of the time (arguably feasible) but all their hits were near max dmg. That being said I'll be missing 99% advantage attacks or rolling 1s and 2s for damage consistantly. Is this an intentional skew for difficulty purpose or am I just that unlucky?

Exactly. When patch 3 came out I suspected the dice were loaded in our favor because I just couldn't miss, couldn't fail an interaction check . . . until I got to the underdark and Tymora stopped smiling. It's just human nature to see patterns where they don't really exist.
