I'm not so into, truth be hold I don't have any knowledge of, DnD lore so I have a question: how does the tadpole develop? Are mindfliers and intellectual devourers two different possible outcomes? Or are the intelectual devourers born from a different path?

Thanks in advance!! smile

Intellect Devourers are a separate thing. The Intellect Devourer is created through a weird ritual that Mind Flayers perform, and we all know how an Illithid is made too well by now.

I honestly hope you have a most marvelous day!

While Intellect Devourers are a separate thing from MindFlayers and do not evolve from tadpoles, it should be pointed out that there are a number of different creatures that can develop from the tadpoles depending on what host creature the tadpole is inserted into. Not all tadpoles will create Mindflayers.

So I've read it before but that ceremorphosis link says that dwarves and halflings are considered unacceptable.

Yeah. One of the things that WotC said Larian could do lore-wise for the purposes of this game is that is no longer canon, at least for the purposes of this game.

It's still cannon for regular tadpoles. But as they explain in this game, these are not regular tadpoles. They have been altered by Netherese shadow magic.

For what purpose? We don't know yet. All we know is they are not acting like normal Illithid tadpoles. Instead of consuming their host's brain and starting the ceremophosis process, they are just hanging out, communicating with their hosts through dreams, and granting special powers.

It may be as simple as an attempt to take over host minds without altering their bodies through ceremorphosis, so they can infiltrate the various societies of Faerûn in a way they can't in their mindflayer form. Like pod people in a '50s sci-fi movie. Get them into positions of power and you've got a fifth column to help in the invasion to come.

Or it could be something else. We really don't know if the Illithids went to the Netherese for help with this, or if this is a Netherese plot and they are just using the Illithids for their own purposes.
