At present, at least, I have no choice but to be from Baldur's Gate. It's a big city where I know people and might be able to get help. Eventually, I'd like to go home. In the meantime, knowing even roughly where I am is going to help me find things.
you say that because you already know it (as player), but the character doesn't know it. my character isn't even from Baldur's gate, so it's not even home for him... maybe such a question would be appropriate only for those characters who came from Baldur's gate, but definitely not for everyone.
