Ok I've been renting Malcolm's house in verdistis and been storing some stuff in the chest and cupboard, such as the holy sword and dagger. After I found the amulet, I went back to verdistis to gather the other two and the chest was gone. I had the dragon belt and some charms in there as well. Any Ideas as to where to look for my missing items?

Did you try re-renting the house? Although, I thought the door got locked when the time was up.....

well, re-renting the house doesn't bring the chest back, neither does buying the house, so I'm stuck with a broken quest. I think I'll just leave that game alone and start a fresh one. Maybe then I can finish the quests that I failed before. I appreciate all the help.

Hey, this happened to my fiancee just last night. I searched the boards, and this is the only other occurrence I found, but if it happened to anyone else, I would like to know if it has been determined exactly what causes it. Is it from not paying the rent? She didn't think she was late, and the house wasn't locked up, and all the items she left on the floor were still there. It was just the chest that was missing, with over 60 items inside (I'm not sure if the chest was totally gone or just empty). I don't think there were any game-necessary items in there, but if there were I saw the link to the inventory recovery post so at least she can get those back. I think she lost 50000 gold too, I'm not sure why she kept it in the chest.
Anyway...if anyone has any information I would appreciate it, or you can just commiserate with me instead.

I don't know what causes this problem, but the fact that the house is uniquely rent/buy-able is probably part of it. You can rent a room in the Ducal inn, though there are less problems with that, IIRC.
She doesn't have a recent save? An older save would give you an idea of what is missing, even if you don't want to revert to it permanently and re-do part of the game.
Don't worry too much about the gold. It was kept in the chest because eventually gold starts cluttering up the inventory; by the end of the game, 50k stacks of gold are considered pocket change.

Well, we've gotten lazy in terms of keeping old saves around. She pretty much has two alternating saves, and uses the quicksaves for everything else. So any previous save would only have been from earlier that night. Oh well, that's the way it goes. Thanks anyway.

Well, last night, based on what I told her about other people's experiences, she decided to buy the house outright and see what happened. And voila, the chest reappeared. She wasn't late with the rent, the house wasn't locked up at all, but buying the house made it reappear. Considering that you can just leave stuff on the ground next to a teleporter and it won't go anywhere, I don't think I will be buying the house when I get to that point.
Anyway, it turned out that she had been keeping the important stuff in the dresser anyway. Not any more though, just in case it happens again.
Thanks for the suggestions!
