In my current game run, I'm clearing the blighted village, The party is level 3.
I'm pretty sure that in my last games, Gale had the magic missiles spell at this time, but now it is not in the spell book and I haven('t found any mm scroll yet. I don't remember where I obtained it the previous times. But now it seems like I have to go searching for it.
I really want this spell, I had a hard time in the cellar with the undead army because some 95% of Gale's evocation spells missed and resurrections were needed after the battle.
Who remembers where Gale can get it ?

There are a few scrolls of it kicking abut, I think, but if you wanted the spell, is there a reason you didn't take it when you leveled up at two or three?

Well no, actually I'm hunting for this spell from the moment Gale joined tha party.
I didn't notice it in the level up choices. Could be my poor eyesight of course... so I missed it twice ? confused

Check again to see if it's in his spell book. It may be you just don't have it equipped.

Did you select magic missile when he leveled up? If not, it would have defaulted to sickening ray and feather fall or some such. In any case, I do hope they allow wizards to learn from scrolls in the new patch like the game says they can.

You can learn from scrolls, I've done it. It's an option on the scroll menu, but It costs 50 gold or something like that.
I can't believe I didn't see this spell when leveling up.
Got 300 xp to go for LV4. Hope I can survive till then.

Scribing level 1 spells cost 50 gold. I believe cantrip are the same. Scribing level 2 spells cost 100 gold.

I found a MM scroll in the scripture cave of the Lolth-devotee down the well. Transcribed it in Gale's spellbook immediately.
Next play I'll pay more attention during level ups.
The spell arrangement is still not very clear to me anyway. You can change spells almost any moment, but sometimes the game will refuse to deselect a spell to replace it by another.

If the game won't deselect a spell, it's probably because it's coming to you from a different source - in the case of a Wizard, you might be getting it from an item - such as Rain Dancer giving you Create Water, or the Blasting Circlet giving you Scorching Ray. In the case of Clerics, your domain spells will be the same.

The game fails to make this clear, but ones that you have access to which are not counting against the number you can prepare will not have a white border on them, even though they are lit up in the spell book.

Right now the issue, rather is that they can do this too much - and have been able to since the Ea release. Wizards can scribe any spell, regardless of whose list it is on. This means wizards with cleric spells, wizards scribing new cantrips (which is a fallacy since cantrips are not recorded in your spell book at all), and other similar shenanigans. At the same time, they've also allowed literally anyone to use spell scrolls as well. This is another case where they've made a change from the base rules without any real understanding of the balance and repercussions, though much feedback has been provided on the issue, and hopes are high that they'll reconsider and fix it.

Thanks for this explanation. I had been wondering also why some spells were bordered and others weren't. I find this post really helpful, thanks.

It's a little clunky, I had this problem. You have to choose it as one of his new Learned spells, AND make sure it's in his prepared list as the two selections don't cross-reference each other, and will also deselect if you change his School choice. Thought I had the same issue but I went back to an Autosave and realised where I messed up.
