as there is no "party leader"
I was in a beast form when we met Astarion, so Shadowheart was pulled in conversation. When Astarion was offered to join the party, he basicaly said to her that she doesn't have the autority, and send her to fetch the leader.
So game is built around player character being a leader. For no reason whatsoever.
