We need the posterboy for Light, Life, and the Sun! And a proper God for Nuetral Good Paladins and Clerics.
We have light clerics but are missing their #1 God.
No other God fills the "warrior of Light" niche like Lathander...
Tyr is rigid and strict. Selune is moon, which is not "path of light" enough for me. Ilmater is great, but a bit too dark/edgy for my personal tastes and is even a bit unsettling...
Without Lathander or at least Torm, we lack an option for the classic good guy type god...
My Nuetral Good Paladin of the Ancients NEEDS Lathander.

Admittedly, I find it a bit strange that Lathander wasn't included. We have Garl Glittergold as an option, but no gnome race, we have Laduguer as an option, but no duergar race, and we have light and life domains for clerics, but no Lathander, the most 'light' and 'life' of the gods? Especially given the role of Lathander/Amaunator in BG2, this is strange... Something is going on, and I'm not quite sure what. Has something happened to Lathander, in the D&D mythology? Perhaps 5th edition Lathander is gone? *shrugs*

His worshippers are around and in one of the campaigns he even blesses you permanently if you help one of his followers find peace. He is the poster God for light clerics and nuetral good paladins... he seriously needs to be included.

He is rather involved in the Forgotten Realms: Beregost. Well I want him involved in BG3. I wanted BG3 to be the ultimate 5e experience for myself but if I cant even heal the sick and smite the wicked in his name, it wont be that 100% perfect match. Ancients Paladin is in, the voice and char creation looks the part... just need Lathander.

Ilmater is pretty cool but its just not the same. Lathander, Amaunator and Talos please!!!!!! Yessss Lathander #1 I dont really need Amaunator as their worship is seen as archaic/incorrect in most of the Sword Coast... Lathander *IS* Amaunator. Talos would be cool. If there is Tempest cleric but no Talos thatll be weird for sure.

Yeah it's crazy to me that he isn't available to pick in a game set on the sword coast... he is a MAJOR Deity and we don't have him. Bur we can choose all sorts of minor deities? Doesnt sig right with me. Give us Lathander!

Er ... why just Lathander or X or Y ? With a bit of exaggeration, all the gods should be available. More specifically, I would have the following requests. Everyone should have a deity. And by everyone I mean not just-Clerics. See the thread there. Please, give us more deities to choose from. The following are well established deities, and I'd say their inclusion is between fairly important and pretty much required : Sune, Lathander/Amaunator, Torm, Talos, Umberlee, Auril, Malar, Sylvanus, Mielikki, Eldath, Chauntea, Mask, Waukeen, as well as Red Knight, Garagos, Valkur, Uthgar, Loviatar, Sharess, Tymora, Beshaba, Talona, Milil, Gond, Bahamut. Note : you have made us encounter a druid circle dedicated to Sylvanus, a cleric of Loviatar, an inn called Waukeen's Rest, etc. Since you mention all this lore, it would be a pity if players cannot have access to it as well. Finally, "none" should be in the list (for all classes, including Cleric), so that players can play character who don't particularly follow a deity. Non-Humans should have more than one deity option. It currently feels as if non-Humans are neglected. When playing a non-Human Cleric, we currently have the choice of either going with the only racial deity given (or the only two, in the case of Drows), or going for the much rarer story of a Cleric worshipping a deity from another society/pantheon than the one we would expect. Maybe there is no need to include the whole pantheon for each race (although ... maybe not), but it would be nice to guarantee 2-4 choices of deities per race, just to say that players had a real choice. Suggestions : Clangeddin, Berronar, and Dugmaren or Marthamor ; Solonor, Rillifane, and perhaps Labelas, Sehanine or Hanali ; Vhaeraun ; Baervan and Baravar ; Arvoreen and Sheela ; Gruumsh, Luthic and Obould.

This is great, but unlikely we get many more gods... if any at all... I think Lathander being left out is the biggest issue of the lot as we do not have a classic good for the sake of good option for our boyscout Paladins. Lathander is the god of the dawn, light, renewal, etc. He is the posterboy for holy gods and his absence makes it a lot harder to make the character I want. Tyr, Ilmater and Selune are great and all but they aren't the "by the light" flavor I would like. The fact Lathander is one of the few "Greater Deity " level gods but not in is baffling.

Just a general lore question: You said non human races are neglected. Does it mean that all the usual gods are considered human gods?
I thought that anyone can worship any god. Its just that some gods are more popular among some races. In Kingmaker (not DnD, I know) Ekun (human ranger) is a follower of Torag (dwarf god).
When writing this I found another question: "god" is not a race and god cannot be members of a race. So saying "Sylvanus is an elf." makes no sense. Gods are just gods. Is that correct?

I'm not a walking lore-encyclopedia, but here's my understanding (no time to spend 1h-2h on forgottenrealms.fandom.com or elsewhere atm).Regarding your second question, I believe it is correct. In general gods are just (powerful) beings.
The "usual gods" constitute the Faerunian pantheon, and are mostly prayed to by humans in Faerun. Other races, and folks in different continents, are less likely to pray to these.
But anyone can worship any god. Aerie from BG2 is a standard example, being an Elf who worships a Gnome deity. I guess it's mostly a matter of culture. You pray to the gods you know about and that you were told you should pray for help with X or Y.
As a result, if I want to play an Elf Cleric, currently the only Elven deity is Corellon (I think). So if I want to pray a goddess of the moon, I must pick Selune. And thus I have to twist my backstory to explain how my Elf came to worship Selune instead of Sehanine. This feels very restrictive. Alternatively, I can pick Selune and pretend that I read Sehanine in the game, but that's not great either.

Anyone can worship any god. Some gods may only respond to worshippers of certain races. The usual gods are all gods of human cultures. Other races can still worship them but most races also have their own gods or pantheons. The "usual" gods are called the Faerunian pantheon -- humans from other continents also have their own pantheons. It may be more correct to say that the usual gods are the gods of the continent rather than of humans as a race. Gods are not some kind of abstract concept in FR and can definitely be or have been of a race. It's true that deities can appear as pretty much any shape they want, but they all also have favoured appearances. It's very unlikely that any of the many racial deities would appear as anything but a member of "their" race.

Gods can indeed be of a specific race, especially because some gods were previously mortals. The Faerunian Pantheon is the groups of gods that people know the best, which is mostly human gods, but also mostly gods of the Sword Coast. Other areas of Faerun have their own groups of gods, such as Mulhorand, which has their own pantheon of egyptian-flavoured gods. But we also have gods separated into racial pantheons, such as the Seldarine, or Elven pantheon. Whether a racial deity accepts worship from other races depends entirely on how xenophobic said gods are, which usually corresponds to how xenophobic the specific race tends to be. Most races have their own deities, though the size of their pantheons varies wildly, and can be as small as one racial god. But gods are also very changeable, at least in the realms, which is the root cause of a lot of confusion about what gods are alive or dead. Bahamut is a dragon god, specifically a god of dragons, but began to accept human worshippers after a lot of shenanigans with being demoted and being made subservient to Torm, and then being promoted by Torm, and is the only god in the draconic pantheon to do so. Here is a page of pantheons on the realms wiki, but even this is not 100% comprehensive, as it's missing the lizardfolk pantheon I think.

I think we should just go crazy and review racial limitations. If I wanna be a Neutral Good Githyanki Paladin who worships a Orc Deity, even if that makes no sense, I want to. Because Insanity is fun and that's what we are all here for in the end. Fun.

+1 OP!!! Very happy you started this thread.
I posted this same sentiment in another thread some months back. Lathander is the perfect FR god for people playing truly good characters. So for me leaving out Lathander just adds to my overall frustration that the good side is getting the shaft in this game. Paladin of Lathander just kicks ass as an awesome good-aligned character.
