I think I missed lots of stuff about my companions because I did not rest very often.
So the game does not only NOT restrict resting in any way, it also encourages you to rest spam just to progress companion quests and see some interesting things.
There is one scene you can only see when you rest before recruiting the first companion and you can find her after a few steps with no enemies in between.

I feel that excessive resting in BG 3 is not right when looking at the the main story line. From the start of the game the characters know they have a tadpole in their head which can within a week or change you into a mindflayer. That indicates resting will advance you towards your own demise.

Later on in the game you get information that some kind of magic is making the tadpole dormant and thus the progress into a mindflayer is slowed. Thus you can consider taking the chance resting more freely.

Having said that we don't know if there are some real consequences in the game regarding resting. Maybe there aren't and then we should rest as often as we can. However, knowing Larian Studios, I have a feeling excessive resting will come back and bite us later in the game. It's similar to using the tadpole ability too often in conversations. Maybe some things will become harder later in the game e. g. like becoming easier to be charmed by mindflayers.

Normally, I would say that I believe you're right. However, it is Larians own system that makes us rest often. I am probably not speaking for myself only when saying that I certainly wouldn't rest as much if it wasn't a requirement to advance the conversations with your companions. *Especially* since we do not know exactly when they want to talk - so resting often and frequently is the only way to make sure that you do not miss out on conversations forever (since they do disappear completely if a new conversation comes, instead of being put in a sort of queue - this is especially noticeable on Gale according to the forum reports). If Larian could introduce a system that caused companions to ask for our attention when we want it, we probably wouldn't feel as compelled to just spam rest "just in case".

Imo, introducing a system punishing us to rest often while they have their current companion conversation-system would be nothing short of sending mixed messages and well... Rather dumb. I doubt sincerely that Larian wants to punish their players for wanting to enjoy their artwork (in this case, their story) - doing so in a game whose entire base of entertainment lies within the story telling would be so weird.

Hoot hoot, stranger! Fairly new to CRPGs, but I tried my best to provide some feedback regardless! <3 Read it here: My Open Letter to Larian
